  • Grade 8 Conference
    Attention Talented SEM Community,

SEM Staff will be hosting a Grade 8 conference. The Goal of the conference is to inspire Leadership in Grade 8 students and address topics of concern in a positive way (e.g., mental health, sleep habits, organization, relationships and high school). This will be a full day session on Thursday, October 18th and will be held at the school.

We know that we have a community full of talented individuals and would love to draw upon our own talents.  If you are open to leading a workshop session please reach out to Erikka Verma vermr@hdsb.ca and/or Jen Smolenaars smolenaarsj@hdsb.ca for more information. Participation would involve leading a 20 minute session for about 10 Grade 8 students (e.g., Tai Chi, Art Therapy, Martial Arts, Diet/Health, Keeping Organized).  All ideas are welcome for consideration.

    Thank you.

    Where learning has no limits!

Welcome back to another exciting school year! We are also thrilled to have many new families with us this year.

We would like to thank our custodial staff for the hard work they did this summer getting the school ready for another year of learning and fun. The school looks great!

Sir Ernest MacMillan is pleased to welcome Mr. Brudnjak (intermediate math/science), Ms. Paterson (grade 5/6), Mme McAloon (primary french) and Ms. Cochrane (DECE). We also welcome back Ms. Rhodes back to our office.

We are looking forward to another great year of learning, clubs, sports, music, the arts and overall student engagement.

    Kindie Korner

Our first week of kindergarten is off to a great start. We have a few reminders to parents and caregivers to ensure student safety and healthily routines.  This year we are asking that families walk around the kindergarten pen and enter in the morning at the back gate once the staff member has arrived in the kindergarten pen. We ask the parents and caregivers who want to stay until the bell rings to  stand on the outside of the fenced pen. Student safety is very important and establishing these expectations from the start of the year will help students develop a positive sense of self.

    Parents in School

The staff at Sir Ernest MacMillan want to thank you for continuing to create a safe environment for our students.  Please remember that parents should be signing in at the office at all times so that the staff and students know who are in our building.  If your child is late or you need to drop something off please come to the office first rather then walking through our halls. If you require to meet with a teacher please come to the office and we can see if they are available, as they are busy getting ready for their day.  You can also arrange a meeting via a phone call or email. Thank you.

    Council Corner

Our first school council meeting is currently scheduled for Monday, October 1. School council is a great way to learn about all of the initiatives happening at the school, to contribute to initiatives and offer suggestions about the operations at the school. All parents/guardians are welcome. Nomination forms will be available soon if you are interested in being a voting member or hold a specific role within our school council. We are always looking for new people with new ideas to add to our council that works at enriching the learning experience of our students.

As you have noticed the city is working hard at building a new baseball diamond and playground for the community. Construction should be completed by December. The city has ensured the school that the children’s safety will not be impacted during the school day.

    Lunch Room Supervisors

Are you are interested in being a paid lunchroom supervisor for the 2018-2019 school year? We require Permanent and Occasional staff for this role. If you are interested, please come to the main office to fill out the necessary paperwork. All new lunchroom supervisors require a recent criminal record check on file at the school.
