Extended French Program at Sir E. MacMillan Public School

At the May 15, 2019 Board meeting, it was recommended that the Halton District School Board’s Extended French Program be discontinued starting in September 2020.

The Extended French Program, also referred to as late entry French Immersion, runs at one elementary school in the HDSB (Sir E. MacMillan Public School in Burlington). Students in the program, which begins in Grade 7, have half of their instructional time in English and half in French, enabling them to accumulate 1,330 hours of French instruction before Grade 9.

Following a review of the program, enrolment data shows significant attrition, resulting in low enrolment numbers in secondary school Extended French courses. Additionally, it was determined that maintaining a program in one community primarily serving one elementary and one secondary school poses an issue of equity and fairness. Data shows more than half of students in the program come from only the Sir E. MacMillan Public School area.

The process to discontinue the program will start in September 2020 with the elimination of the Grade 7 class. Current students in Extended French from Grade 7 and up will continue in the program.
