Extended French Program at Sir E. MacMillan Public School

posted Jun 27, 2019, 6:46 AM by Christopher Row

At the May 15, 2019 Board meeting, it was recommended that the Halton District School Board’s Extended French Program be discontinued starting in September 2020.

The Extended French Program, also referred to as late entry French Immersion, runs at one elementary school in the HDSB (Sir E. MacMillan Public School in Burlington). Students in the program, which begins in Grade 7, have half of their instructional time in English and half in French, enabling them to accumulate 1,330 hours of French instruction before Grade 9.

Following a review of the program, enrolment data shows significant attrition, resulting in low enrolment numbers in secondary school Extended French courses. Additionally, it was determined that maintaining a program in one community primarily serving one elementary and one secondary school poses an issue of equity and fairness. Data shows more than half of students in the program come from only the Sir E. MacMillan Public School area.

The process to discontinue the program will start in September 2020 with the elimination of the Grade 7 class. Current students in Extended French from Grade 7 and up will continue in the program.

MacMillan Book Fair

We are excited to have the Scholastic Book Fair back at Sir Ernest MacMillan. This week the students will be walking through the Book Fair to get an idea of what items they wish to purchase. Classes will then have an opportunity to purchase items on Wednesday and Thursday during the day. We will also have the Book Fair open during Student Led Conferences Thursday evening and Friday morning.

Parking Lot Reminder

Please remember not to leave your vehicle to escort your child(ren) to the blacktop, unless you are parked in a designated parking spot. If you can not find a spot then we ask that you loop around using Headon Rd. If you are dropping your children off, please use the Drop Off Zone indicated on the map. Please refer to the map below, which indicates the flow of traffic. We want to ensure all of our community members are safe when using our parking lot.

Cold Weather

With the colder weather and snow upon us, please ensure your child(ren) are coming to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants are highly recommended especially for our students who love playing on the field during recess. The Board’s Inclement Weather Reminders are being sent home this week.

Holiday Concert

Please join us on Tuesday, December 11 for this year’s Holiday Concert. The bands, choir, drumline and other groups are busy putting together another fantastic show. The evening starts at 6:30 pm and then join us afterwards for some hot chocolate, cookies and crafts. Families are encouraged to bring in a donation for our Giving Tree. We will be collecting hats, mittens, scarves and non-perishable food items in the month of December.

Thank you.

Grade 8 Conference

posted Sep 12, 2018, 9:22 AM by Christopher Row

Attention Talented SEM Community,

SEM Staff will be hosting a Grade 8 conference. The Goal of the conference is to inspire Leadership in Grade 8 students and address topics of concern in a positive way (e.g., mental health, sleep habits, organization, relationships and high school). This will be a full day session on Thursday, October 18th and will be held at the school.

We know that we have a community full of talented individuals and would love to draw upon our own talents.  If you are open to leading a workshop session please reach out to Erikka Verma and/or Jen Smolenaars for more information. Participation would involve leading a 20 minute session for about 10 Grade 8 students (e.g., Tai Chi, Art Therapy, Martial Arts, Diet/Health, Keeping Organized).  All ideas are welcome for consideration.

Thank you.
